Over the last few years, but especially recently, the entire structure of health insurance has changed. With the introduction of the Affordable Healthcare Act, millions of Americans were given access to healthcare; who were previously unable to receive it. However, for the majority individuals and families, the Affordable Care Act created many problems with their healthcare. Such as, losing their doctor, smaller networks, very high premiums, very high deductibles and more, making it unaffordable and unusable. More than ever, many of my clients have reevaluated their needs and their choices when it comes to health insurance. Choosing an insurance plan on your own can be an overwhelming task. As an experienced Health insurance agent, I know the different restrictions and benefits tied to each type of Health Insurance Plan. Let me take the overwhelming burden away by helping you choose a plan that suits you and/or your family’s needs and budget.
There are two general types of health insurance, Group and Individual. Within them, there are Major Medical plans, such as HMOs or (PPOs – employer group only) and there are Alternatives to Major Medical plans, which are also PPOs.
Major Medical is the “you pay first” then “insurance company pays second” model. Major medical has the most costly premiums, deductibles, and highest out of pocket yearly cost. You have the high deductible to cover first, maybe some copays, then a percent of the bill, and then they pay their percent. These plans are mainly designed for people with serious pre-existing sickness/illnesses, who have expected expensive yearly medical costs, and need to be approved with no medical questions asked. This certainly drives the premium higher, since the insurance companies are expecting to have high costs to cover your anticipated medical expenses.
Individual Alternatives to Major Medical usually pay benefits right away, without you having to pay a large deductible first. They are designed for people that are either healthy or relatively healthy (some conditions are acceptable). These plans are medically underwritten and they are rated based on the expected expense you represent. You get the benefit of paying much lower premiums, deductibles, and over all yearly costs. If you get sick or injured, the plan pays defined benefit amounts chosen at time of purchase for covered services. You can customize the coverage of this plan to fit your needs and budget. Most times you can add riders that will enhance the base coverage, giving you a great way to protect you and/or your family from an unexpected financial burden. This is the best way to keep the cost low and stay protected from the unexpected sickness or injuries.
High end comprehensive alternative PPO's have the highest growth in popularity ,and are high in demand in the individual market today. They are affordable high end defined benefit plans that are in one of the largest national PPO' networks called PHCS, such as Philadelphia American Life insurance company. They allow you customize the coverage, add affordable riders that enhance the coverage, negotiate rates with providers if you choose to in addition to the already negotiated rates. If you are relatively healthy, these medically underwritten plans will save you thousands per year in health insurance and medical costs, giving you back control of your medical cost.
“An affordable approach to health care”
These plans are not advertised and are sold “wholesale direct” through brokers like myself. They are medically underwritten. The carrier only approves and issues policies if the health is acceptable (some medical conditions accepted) the insurance carrier’s cost savings is passed onto you in the form of a lower monthly premium and a lower annual deductible.
